Hurricane Irene hit us Saturday, August 27, 2011. Andy had spent the day before buying hurricane supplies and preparing the house. We met Grammy early that Saturday morning and picked up our Gabey Babey from a week at her house. On our drive back home, the rain started. Lots and lots of rain. We made it home safely and prepared ourselves for a long day of indoor fun. In between watching movies and playing in the basement, I made us some cookies and a yummy dinner. Finally, after hours of being indoors, we decided to go stand in the garage and watch the rain... which then very quickly turned into playing in the rain...
and the river that was flowing through our back yard!
The wind and rain really picked up later that evening... luckily Gabe went to sleep without any difficulties.... and then our work began!!!
Andy noticed that water was pouring into the basement from the window wells... even though the window wells were covered up! We very quickly began picking everything up off of the floor and started bailing water! We were completely soaked and freezing... but at least we had power!!! We bailed water continuously for several hours before changing into some dry clothes and taking a break... we were able to get a hour or so of sleep before the power went out. And then we really started panicking! Up until this point, the sump pump was our saving grace. Luckily, we were only without power for a couple hours. Not days like some!!
In the end, it was a lot of work, but we saved our basement and all of our belongings!
The whole time we were bailing water, I kept thinking of Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone, "This is my house, and I have to defend it"!!!
